There are two retention ponds in Planty Park; installation of a floating fountain has been completed on the larger of the two. The uppermost (middle) stream lifts the frothy water to a height of about 3.5 meters, and the lower rows of streams create a dense, highly visible mist achieving a frothy water effect of 7 meters in diameter.

Why aerate ponds ponds?

  • Reducing the amount of silt – the scarier the pond is, the more nutrients accumulate on its bottom, becoming mud (silt). Aeration of the pond water promotes the colonization of beneficial aerobic bacteria, which consume nutrients to reduce the accumulation of mud and prevent its accumulation on the bottom in the future.
  • Improving water quality – dead plant fragments not only accumulate on the bottom of the pond becoming silt, but are also suspended in the water column, making the pond appear cloudy. By reducing pollution and excess unnecessary plant matter by increasing oxygen and water circulation, water quality and clarity are improved. Additionally, by aerating the pond water, algae and weeds are reduced, as there will not be as many nutrients in the pond to fuel their growth.
  • Increase the level of dissolved oxygen – without oxygen, beneficial bacteria will not survive, and their anaerobic counterparts are not as effective at breaking down organic material, and they then produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, giving the pond its characteristic bad smell.
